Introduction to Soya Processing

Soya processing is a crucial industrial procedure that transforms raw soybeans into high-quality oils, protein-rich meal, and other valuable derivatives. Soybeans are one of the most widely cultivated crops globally due to their high protein content, versatility, and numerous applications in food, feed, and industrial sectors. However, before they can be used effectively, soybeans must undergo a series of processing steps to ensure purity, safety, and optimal performance in their final applications.

By utilizing advanced processing technologies, companies can maximize oil yield, improve product quality, and reduce waste, making soya processing a highly efficient and sustainable industry.

The Importance of Soya Processing in the Global Market

Soybeans are a major commodity in the global agricultural market, with millions of tons processed annually for various uses. The demand for soy-based products has increased significantly due to their role in healthy diets, renewable energy, and sustainable animal nutrition.

Processed soybeans are used to produce soybean oil, a widely used edible oil known for its neutral flavor, high smoke point, and heart-healthy properties. Additionally, soy meal, a by-product of oil extraction, serves as a key ingredient in livestock and poultry feed, contributing to the global protein supply chain.

The industrial sector also benefits from processed soy derivatives, which are used in biodegradable plastics, biofuels, lubricants, and pharmaceutical products. This highlights the economic and environmental significance of efficient soya processing technologies.

Key Steps in Soya Processing

Cleaning and Preparation

Before processing begins, raw soybeans undergo cleaning and sorting to remove impurities such as dirt, stones, and plant debris. This step ensures that only high-quality soybeans proceed to further processing, reducing contamination risks.

Once cleaned, soybeans are conditioned by adjusting moisture and temperature levels, making them easier to dehull and process. Proper conditioning also improves extraction efficiency, maximizing oil yield and maintaining nutritional quality.

Dehulling and Grinding

The next stage involves dehulling, where the outer shell of the soybean is removed. This step is critical as soy hulls contain fiber but lower protein content, which may not be desirable in certain applications. Dehulling improves the protein concentration of the final soybean meal, making it more suitable for animal feed and food production.

After dehulling, the beans are ground into small flakes, increasing their surface area for efficient oil extraction.

Oil Extraction

Soybean oil is extracted using either mechanical pressing or solvent extraction.

  • Mechanical pressing involves physically squeezing the oil from the soybean flakes. This method is used for small-scale processing but results in lower oil yields compared to solvent extraction.
  • Solvent extraction, typically using hexane, is the industry standard for large-scale production, as it efficiently extracts a higher percentage of oil while maintaining product integrity.

Once extracted, crude soybean oil is separated from the soy meal and sent for further refining, while the meal is processed into animal feed or protein-rich food products.

Refining and Purification

Crude soybean oil contains impurities, free fatty acids, and undesirable pigments that must be removed through refining. The refining process consists of:

  • Degumming, which eliminates phospholipids and gums that can cause instability.
  • Neutralization, which reduces free fatty acids and prevents rancidity.
  • Bleaching, which improves color by removing unwanted pigments.
  • Deodorization, which eliminates odors and enhances the oil’s flavor and usability.

These steps ensure that refined soybean oil meets strict industry standards for food, cosmetic, and industrial applications.

Applications of Processed Soya

Food Industry

Soybeans are an essential ingredient in plant-based food production, offering high protein content and healthy fats. Processed soy is used in:

  • Soybean oil, commonly used in cooking, frying, and salad dressings.
  • Soy protein isolates, found in meat alternatives and nutritional supplements.
  • Soy flour, used in baking and food fortification.

Animal Feed

Soy meal is one of the primary sources of protein in animal feed, providing essential nutrients for livestock, poultry, and aquaculture. The high digestibility and balanced amino acid profile of soy meal make it ideal for enhancing animal growth and productivity.

Industrial Uses

Processed soy derivatives are increasingly being used in biodegradable plastics, biofuels, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. As industries shift towards sustainable alternatives, soy-based products are gaining popularity in renewable energy, eco-friendly packaging, and organic skincare formulations.

Challenges and Innovations in Soya Processing

Despite its efficiency, soya processing faces challenges such as energy consumption, solvent recovery, and by-product utilization. Innovations in enzymatic extraction, green chemistry, and automation are helping to improve processing efficiency, sustainability, and product quality.

Companies are also investing in alternative extraction methods that reduce reliance on chemical solvents, ensuring cleaner and safer soy products.

  • TECHNOILOGY is happy to announce the signing of a contract with global energy company CEPSA for the manufacturing of a Pre-treatment unit. This is the latest of several agreements signed by TECHNOILOGY with oil corporations that are moving towards renewable diesel Production. Among them, ENI, GALP and KPN Corporation 1 (list of all projects below). Cepsa and Bio-Oils biofuels’ project Cepsa and Bio-Oils, a subsidiary of major Indonesian vegetable oil processor Apical, celebrated on February 23rd the beginning of the construction of the largest second-generation biofuels plant in southern Europe. The facility, which will flexibly produce 500,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (hydrogenated vegetable oil or HVO) annually, will be located in Huelva, Spain, and will allow the joint venture formed by both companies to double its current production capacity, starting from 2026. TECHNOILOGY’s Pre-treatment process Huelva’s PTU – that will process UCO and other waste feedstocks – is one of the several PTU provided by TECHNOILOGY to global energy groups.    From 2020, the company finalized various contracts for the supply of Pre-Treatment units including its unique Organic Dechlorination process, the only process in the world capable of drastically mitigating organic Chlorine in the low-grade feedstocks commonly used by Oil Producers in HVO and SAF Production plants. “It took us several years of trials to develop our Organic Dechlorination process and we are now reaping the benefits of our work. Our extensive experience with 3rd generation Biodiesel plants allowed us to reach before others an exclusive know how in the field of waste feedstock Pre-treatment for HVO and SAF Production. • The Transformative Journey of UCO Treatment

In the pursuit of sustainability and environmental responsibility, the treatment of Used Cooking Oil (UCO) has become a focal point in the realm of waste management. This article delves into the innovative processes of UCO treatment, unveiling its significance and impact on creating a greener, more circular economy. UCO treatment involves the careful and systematic processing of used cooking oil, redirecting it from a waste stream to a valuable resource. The primary goal is to convert UCO into biodiesel, a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Through methods like hydrotreating and transesterification, UCO is refined to meet stringent quality standards, making it a viable source for eco-friendly energy. The benefits of UCO treatment extend beyond fuel production; it mitigates environmental hazards associated with improper disposal, reducing pollution and promoting a circular economy. As industries worldwide embrace the principles of sustainability, UCO treatment emerges as a key player in reducing carbon footprints and promoting a more responsible approach to waste management. In the global shift towards a sustainable future, UCO treatment stands as a beacon of innovation, turning waste into a valuable resource. As industries increasingly recognize the potential of UCO as a renewable energy source, the journey from discarded cooking oil to cleaner, greener biodiesel becomes a testament to the transformative power of responsible waste management.
